Gail Sorronda

I first read about Gail Sorronda on Style Bubble, and really the first thing I thought was that I really can't wait to go to Australia, and also that I should look into more Ozzie designers before I go out there, especially if they're anything like Sorronda.

numero 88

Model: Coco Rocha
Photographer: Sølve Sundsbø

I have been researching a lot of Sølve Sundsbø's work lately, and I will absolutely be looking out for him in future editorials. His work has no thematic or stylistic continuity, aside from its consistent vibrancy and freshness. He is officially added to my list of reasons that Norway is amazing.

Powerhaus

What I find most intriguing about the work of Canadian duo Powerhaus is the unexpected amalgamation of luxe, spindly body decoration and pared down stylistic austerity. It's probably a well thought-out ruse to make their jewellery seem essential, and it has worked.

Last Breath Bruises

I don't think I've left the house without a cardigan for the last 10 years, but whilst I do consider it an essential basic, I have never thought of knitwear as particularly exciting. Sandra Backlund's fiercely anti-practical knits are a slap in the face to granny's cosy Marks and Spencer cover-ups. The heavily sculpted designs are styled with fluidly metallic pvc, sheer nylon and bare flesh to emphasize Backlund's rejection of the traditional. My next cardigan will be bottle green, preferrably with 5ft shoulder pads.

"The human body is always the starting point in my work, I am really fascinated by all the ways you can highlight, distort and transform the natural silhouette of the body with clothes and accessories. I build my garments by hand from a couple of basic bricks which I multiply and attach to each other in different ways to discover the shape that I want. In that sense I approach fashion more like a sculptor than a tailor." - Backlund.

Chilled

I've been feeling quite run down and grumpy lately, which, added to the awful weather, have made slouchy, knitted type creations very appealing. Clothes that aren't necessarily designed to flatter a figure, but encourage comfortable, relaxed burrowing and hibernation in times of sudden chill or attacks of fatigue.

In other news, a number of different factors (uniform allowance, birthday money, security deposit refund, discount store card) are about to culminate in a ridiculous shopping spree, and when I finally have a day off I am going to make sure I document all of my new treasures before I wear them to death. So that my boss would let me buy an entirely black uniform, I promised her that I would go into work tomorrow pretty much as Alice in Wonderland, which should be very interesting...

Daily Style

I'm definitely going to start writing some decent posts soon but life is so hectic at the moment that it seems impossible.
For now I'm going to once again share something pleasingly proportioned from the Sartorialist.

Two Outfits

I think the way clothes are worn is far more important than the clothes themselves. This is why, for example, someone like Victoria Beckham always looks dreadful, even though she has more money than she could ever spend. It's also why I love to read street style blogs, which focus on personal interpretations of fashion over brands and labels. Here are two examples of very simple looks made excellent when worn with a striking attitude:

Boots

I currently can't stop thinking about a certain pair of boots I ordered from All Saints last week. They were one of those items that I dismissed 2 months ago for being too expensive and impractical, then obsessed about every day (and it doesn't help that I pass All Saints every day before and after work). Last Friday I decided to just pop in on my way home to try them on, to prove to myself that they weren't as amazing as I had built them up to be, then hopefully move on.

I ended up getting the phone numbers of all the stores that had them left in stock in my size and phoned each and every one of them, as well as several friends within a 45 minute radius for possible collection purposes. Resultantly, a pair should be waiting for me in Cambridge by Friday, as a generous 21st birthday present to myself. Luckily the weather has been crappy lately, because clompy calf-height military boots might be slightly uncomfortable in 30 degree heat, and they aren't going to be leaving my feet once I have them in my possession. I will be wearing them with a bad attitude and wet look leggings.
